Very good points! At Drexel they did split the school media people out from the rest of us - so that's a plus I guess. They also offered optional tracks - which I did not follow. For me, I wanted the mixed bag. I had worked in the library for 5+ years and knew that I wanted to work in a department with an IT focus. That means I have to know a little bit about everything - otherwise how can I work with people in different departments?

As for a clear vision - here! here!

I think that being "ALA Accredited" has to mean that there is something standard across the board. I also think that vision has to change from generation to generation (or maybe more). One of my textbooks was from the early 90s - and informed me that I needed AOL and a phone line to get on the Internet - are you kidding me???

I'm just ranting now - so I'll stop. I agree with you and I hope to see some changes because the new librarians aren't any more prepared than their predecessors were for the changes that are happening around us - library school should prepare us a bit - not just show us the theory and throw us to the wolves.
